TCU Institute of Child Development updates name to honor late founder

The TCU Institute of Child Development has changed its name to the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development in honor of late founder and director Karyn Purvis.

Dr. Karyn Purvis

Purvis devoted her life to healing “children from hard places,” a term she coined to describe children who have experienced some type of abuse, neglect or trauma. Together with David Cross, she developed Trust-Based Relational Intervention® to train parents and professionals in evidence-based, holistic philosophies for healing harmed children. The duo co-founded the Institute in 2005 and have empowered thousands of parents, professionals and students in more than 25 countries with strategies to help heal vulnerable children.

Purvis, an internationally renowned child development expert, popular speaker, author and passionate advocate for vulnerable children, died last April after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

“Karyn’s influence at the Institute remains strong, and now her legacy will continue in name as well as in spirit,” said Provost Nowell Donovan. “I truly believe this recognition will serve the Institute well as Dr. Cross and his team achieve new milestones.”

Part of TCU’s College of Science & Engineering, the Institute conducts research to deepen understanding of the complex needs of vulnerable children and how to help them overcome social, behavioral and emotional challenges.
