Ze-Li Dou, associate professor in TCU’s mathematics department, Curby Alexander, associate professor of professional practice, and Liran Ma, professor of computer science, have been awarded a $220,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in recognition of their research and commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and education in the areas of deep learning security.

TCU’s Actuarial Program is designed to prepare students with a supreme mathematical foundation for careers in risk management, insurance, pension planning, and financial planning. Actuarial career options can also extend to fields where prediction skills and analysis of compound interest are crucial, such as criminal justice.

Greg Friedman, chair of TCU’s Department of Mathematics, has been named the new John William and Helen Stubbs Potter Professor of Mathematics at Texas Christian University. Friedman joined the College of Science & Engineering as an assistant professor of mathematics in 2005. He was promoted to associate professor in 2010 and then to professor in 2016. In 2019 he was named chair of the Department of Mathematics, and in 2020 Friedman received the TCU Deans’ Award for Research and Creativity.

The Atatiana Project held a summer camp at TCU in July where children with limited or no computer access would receive a free laptop to utilize for furthering their education. Emily Herzig, an instructor in the Department of Mathematics, partnered with Curt Larsen, professor of professional practice in the College of Science & Engineering, in the camp effort, helping students assemble a computer from a kit and teaching them how to program and use it.

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Diana Loucks ’96 graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor in astrophysics from TCU. She went on to earn a master of science degree in 2008 and a Ph.D. in 2017 - both in aerospace engineering sciences, from the University of Colorado Boulder. She was commissioned at TCU in December 1996, and is married to fellow Army officer Lieutenant Colonel Gary Loucks.
