Electrolyte drinks can support hydration during intense exercise or prolonged heat exposure, but for most people, water is enough, according to McKale Montgomery, assistant professor of nutritional sciences in the Louise Dilworth Davis College of Science & Engineering.
Featured in Verywell Health, Montgomery shared practical guidance on when electrolyte drinks are beneficial and when
they're unnecessary. She noted that most people get adequate electrolytes through a balanced diet and encouraged paying attention to hydration cues rather than reaching for sports drinks out of habit.
“A light lemonade color generally means you’re well hydrated, while darker urine can indicate it’s time to drink more fluids,” Montgomery said, recommending a check of urine color as a simple way to monitor hydration. She added that electrolyte drinks are most useful during extended exercise or heavy sweating, rather than for everyday hydration.
