Fathi Joins as Endowed Petroleum Engineering Professor to Advance Innovative Research
Ebrahim Fathi joined TCU this semester in the Ross B. Matthews Professorship in Petroleum Engineering in the Davis College of Science & Engineering. The professorship was established in 2007 by Kathleen and Ross B. Matthews.
The engineering professor’s research focuses on developing sustainable energy solutions through carbon capture, utilization and storage, engineered geothermal systems, artificial intelligence and advanced subsurface engineering. His interdisciplinary work combines data science, computational modeling and reservoir engineering to address complex challenges in energy production, storage and environmental sustainability.

Matthews Professor of Petroleum Engineering,” Fathi said. “This endowed position provides an important foundation for advancing innovative research, strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations and involving students in emerging technologies that are shaping the future of energy. I look forward to building on TCU’s strengths in engineering while creating new opportunities for our students and research partners.”
Fathi has led numerous federally and industry-funded research projects, including initiatives supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory and major energy companies, and he is widely recognized for his expertise in unconventional energy resources and carbon management.
Fathi earned a Bachelor of Science in mining engineering and a Master of Science in petroleum engineering from the University of Tehran, then completed a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Oklahoma. He is the co-author of three books, including the widely used textbook Hydraulic Fracturing in Unconventional Reservoirs, has served in editorial leadership roles for several international journals and has received national recognition for his research and technical contributions, including the AIME Rossiter W. Raymond Memorial Award and multiple Society of Petroleum Engineers Outstanding Technical Editor Awards.
