Crafts and Conversations

Students and residentsFounded in 2020 through an EPIC Grant, TCU’s Crafts & Conversations program has forged a unique bond between students and the residents of Trinity Terrace, a Fort Worth retirement community. This intergenerational initiative, led by students from TCU’s Pre-Health Program in the College of Science & Engineering, connects students and seniors through fun crafting projects and meaningful conversations, breaking down generational barriers.

“There is never a lack of smiles at each session, and the connections made are heartwarming—I have found myself looking forward to my volunteer hours there and catching up with the residents that I now know by name,” said program member Alyssa Schexnayder ’26.

For the residents, Crafts & Conversations is not only an opportunity to connect with students and engage in hands-on creative projects but also an amazing mental health break. Carol Stanford, a longtime attendee of the program, highlighted the value of these connections: “I think they’ve learned that just because you’re ‘old’ doesn’t mean you can’t be interesting. I’ve enjoyed hearing about what they’re doing in school, and I have also enjoyed doing the crafts together.”

For TCU students, the program is an opportunity to give back to the community and gain valuable perspective. “Seeing their response to a performance is really encouraging. I love sharing my love for music with other people,” said student member Grady O’Gara ’26, who often performs for the seniors.

Students and residentsEric Shepherd ’26, another student volunteer, shared his appreciation for the conversations he’s had with residents: “I think everyone has the potential to teach us something if we just listen, and Crafts & Conversations gives us the opportunity to do that.”

The program offers Pre-Health students invaluable hands-on experience through one-on-one interactions with seniors. These meaningful engagements help students develop essential skills such as empathy, active listening, and effective communication – all crucial in the healthcare field.

The success of Crafts & Conversations is a testament to the collaborative spirit between TCU and the staff at Trinity Terrace. The staff play an active role in organizing events, choosing crafts and making decisions that enrich the experience for everyone involved.

Crafts & Conversations is about more than just crafting; it’s about fostering a sense of appreciation for each other’s cultures, histories and hobbies. It’s an opportunity for students and seniors alike to bridge generational divides, share stories and create memories that will last a lifetime.
