Majors & Minors
Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics (BA)
The Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, a canonical liberal arts degree in mathematics, builds mathematical reasoning skills starting from a foundation of single and multivariable calculus, discrete mathematics, and linear algebra. The degree provides a broad mathematical background appropriate for students seeking careers in both industry and teaching. Students planning graduate work in mathematics are strongly encouraged to pursue the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (BS)
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics provides a deeper and more demanding curriculum in Mathematics than the Bachelor of Arts, appropriate for students seeking a technical career or planning to go to graduate school in mathematics or related fields.
Actuarial Science Majors
This program is designed to prepare students for careers in insurance, risk analysis, pension management, financial planning and other related areas. The actuarial concentration can be combined with either the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics.
Bachelor of Arts in Actuarial Science (BA)
The Bachelor of Arts in Actuarial Science prepares students for careers in insurance, risk analysis, pension management, financial planning, and other related areas. It prepares students with a broad background in mathematics with associated requirements in Economics, Accounting, and Finance. Coursework treats the material for the first two Society of Actuary exams in financial mathematics and probability.
Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science (BS)
The Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science prepares students for careers in insurance, risk analysis, pension management, financial planning, and other related areas. It provides deeper training in mathematics and statistics than the Bachelor of Arts, with the same associated requirements in Economics, Accounting, and Finance. Coursework treats the material for the first two Society of Actuary exams in financial mathematics and probability and also introduces students to advanced statistical modeling.
Bachelor of Science in Data Science
This program is designed to prepare students for a broad set of careers involving the analysis of data.
Minor in Mathematics
The Mathematics Minor provides basic training in mathematics suitable to complement a major in another department.
Actuarial Minor
The Actuarial Science Minor introduces students to careers in insurance, risk analysis, pension management, financial planning, and other related areas. The minor includes three semesters of calculus and coursework tied to preparation for one of the first two Society of Actuary exams. Students also complete one year of associated requirements in Economics.
