Core Credit & Placement

Mathematical Reasoning Core Courses

The TCU Core Curriculum requires every student to satisfy a Mathematical Reasoning requirement. The requirement may be met by any of the following courses:

  • MATH 10033 Topics in Mathematics
  • MATH 10043 Elementary Statistics
  • MATH 10283 Applied Calculus
  • MATH 10524 Calculus I
  • MATH 20524 Calculus II

Your specific degree program may require additional mathematics courses beyond the ones listed above.

Credit By Exam

  • MATH 10043 Elementary Statistics
        ○ Score of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics Exam
  • MATH 10054 Precalculus with Trigonometry
        ○ Score of 4 or higher on the AP Precalculus Exam
  • MATH 10283 Applied Calculus
        ○ Score of 3 on the AP Calculus AB Exam
  • MATH 10524 Calculus I
        ○ Score of 4 or higher on the AP Calculus AB Exam
        ○ Score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus BC Exam
        ○ Score of 65 or higher on the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
            Calculus Exam
        ○ Score of 6 or 7 in an International Baccalaureate (IB) Mathematics HL
            course
  • MATH 20524 Calculus II
        ○ Score of 5 on AP Calculus BC exam; in this case, the student receives
            credit for both MATH 10524 and MATH 20524

Placement in MATH 10283 Applied Calculus

MATH 10283 Applied Calculus is taken primarily by students who plan to major in business. Please see further below for placement information for MATH 10524 Calculus I, which is taken primarily by science and engineering students.

 To enroll in MATH 10283, students must meet  one  of the following requirements:

  • A grade of C- or better in MATH 10054 or MATH 10273
  • A score of 3 of higher on the AP Precalculus Exam
  • High school Precalculus and a score of 600 or higher on the SAT math exam (ACT math score of 24 of higher is also accepted)
  • A passing score on the Calculus Placement Exam.

Copies of satisfactory AP, SAT, or ACT math scores must be provided or be on file with the TCU Registrar in order to use these as prerequisites to register for MATH 10283. A student awaiting scores may choose to take the Calculus Placement Exam. For new TCU students, all placement exams should be taken at least two weeks prior to your scheduled Orientation session.

If you have taken MATH 10273 at TCU and earned a grade below a C-, you will not be permitted to place into Math 10283 via the placement test. In this case you must retake Math 10273, or an equivalent transfer course, and earn at least a C- in order to enroll in Math 10283.

Placement in MATH 10524 Calculus I

MATH 10524 Calculus I is taken primarily by science and engineering students. Please see above for placement information for MATH 10283 Applied Calculus, which is taken primarily by students who plan to major in business.

To enroll in MATH 10524, students must meet  one  of the following requirements:

  • A grade of C- or better in MATH 10054
  • A score of 4 or higher on the AP Precalculus Exam; in this case, the student receives credit for MATH 10054
  • A score of 3 or higher on either the AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC exam
  • A passing score on the Calculus Placement Exam 

Copies of satisfactory AP or test scores must be provided or be on file with the TCU Registrar in order to use these as prerequisites to register for MATH 10524. A student awaiting scores may choose to take the Calculus Placement Exam.

If you have taken MATH 10054 at TCU and earned a grade below a C-, you will not be permitted to place into MATH 10524 via the placement test. In this case you must retake MATH 10054 or an equivalent transfer course, and earn at least a C- in order to enroll in MATH 10524.
